With the start of campaigning for the General Election Messrs Brown and Cameron are facing the voters on the campaign trail and taking orders from their image gurus. On the surface this may have very little to do with rakeback poker but if we scratch a little deeper there are some very strong correlations between politics and poker...
Both politicians and rake back players are reliant on their ability to judge others’ perceptions and influence how they themselves are perceived. Perception is not an objective science and a person’s ability to perceive situations accurately can be improved by understanding the common pitfalls associated with perception
To win a general election in the UK a party or leader is now entering into a popularity contest due to the insignificance of their policies on the mass voting public. This popularity contest is a struggle for perception. Politicians will want the public to perceive them in a certain way and this image they want to portray will be based on their team’s perception of what the public wants to see.
The Labour Party and the Conservatives will be constantly analysing the general public in a big to understand what the public want in order to then deliver it themselves. Whichever party is able to more accurately perceive the public’s demand will be able to design a suitable strategy in order to overcome their rival and win the election. The end result of this strategy will be the image they attempt to portray to the voting public who will make their own judgements based on their own perceptions of the parties.
Much like the two political parties a player in a hand will analyse the rest of the table and look to understand the sentiment of each player in order to make the correct decision. If our hero perceives the other players to be weak then a raise will be a judicious play but if he perceives them as strong then a different course of action is required. In the same decision making process a player will need to have an understanding of how he is perceived by the rest of the table or even if they have any image of him at all.

David Williams Wins WPT Championship
David Williams led a somewhat charmed life on his way to scooping the WPT Championship on Saturday night at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. After a gruelling heads-up battle with Eric Baldwin Williams’ pair of deuces pre-flop was able to improve on the turn to bottom set and ship the title to the Vegas pro.
The final table was a veritable who’s who of 2010 rakeback poker tournaments as David Benyamine, Billy Baxter, Shawn Buchanan and John O’Shea made up the final six. It was the Irishman O’Shea who was out first on the final table as his aggressive do-or-die attitude from the outset proved to be his undoing. After pushing all in first hand he eventually found somebody willing to call after a few more hands and was left hoping his 63 offsuit would improve against Billy baxter’s A-T. The board hit nobody and left O’shea going home with a shade under $200k in his pocket.
Baxter was next to go after Williams flopped the broadway straight but the veteran pro was rewarded with a quarter of a million dollars to soothe the pain. After these two left early on the stacks ensured there was plenty of play before David Benyamine was sent to the rail as his QJ was unable to improve against Buchanan’s A5.
Once again the winner of the confrontation was knocked out by Williams as Buchanan committed pre-flop with a pair of Queens but ran into Williams pocket 9s which binked a set on the flop and left Buchanan ruing his luck. After this hand Williams was left with a 3:1 chip lead going in to heads up with Eric Baldwin.
Bladwin was the 2009 rake back Card Player of the Year but he was never able to get to grips with Williams and found himself out of the tournament in the cruellest of fashions. Baldwin moved all in pre-flop with A5 and found an optimistic call from Williams holding 2-2. When the ace fell on the flop Williams needed one of the remaining twos to take home the title. The turn showed a 2 and for the second time on the final table Williams had his set and with it the title.
Williams takes home $1.5m with Eric Baldwin collecting just over a million for his efforts.
